Rural Peruvian Amazon Harbors Dengue Mosquito, Study Finds
A new study led by Cornell University has found that Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which spread dengue virus, are present in rural communities of the Peruvian Amazon. Researchers surveyed 30 sites along major river shipping routes between Iquitos, Pucallpa, and Yurimaguas, identifying the species at 29 locations.
The study challenges the previous understanding that Aedes aegypti is almost exclusively an urban mosquito. Lead author Kara Fikrig, Ph.D. ’22, noted that rural areas had not been seen as high risk and had therefore not received focused resources for dengue prevention. The findings suggest that rural communities may also face a risk of dengue transmission.
The research team hopes that these results will lead to better allocation of public health resources. The study was supported by the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability Rapid Response and Academic Venture Funds.
