Cornell Launches Virtual Reality Clean Room Tour
The Cornell Nanoscale Science and Technology Facility (CNF) has introduced a free virtual reality outreach module aimed at preparing young students for careers in microchip fabrication. The module uses high-definition, 360-degree video to offer users access to CNF's 17,000-square-foot clean room—the facility where microchips are produced. Participants can use a VR headset, laptop, or tablet to explore the clean room, meet CNF’s expert staff, and learn about the processes involved in manufacturing chips used in modern electronics, including devices like smartphones and systems powered by artificial intelligence.
CNF plans to develop additional modules to help address a predicted gap in the semiconductor workforce. Professor Judy Cha, Director of CNF and a faculty member of materials science and engineering at Cornell Engineering, emphasized that the virtual reality approach makes clean room education more accessible by allowing students to experience the technology remotely, whether in classrooms, homes, or other locations.
