Cornell Launches Wildlife Camera Citizen Science Initiative

Cornell University in Ithaca has launched a new citizen science program that aims to gather extensive data on animal populations across New York state. Volunteers are being invited to set up trail cameras to capture images of wild animals. The data collected will be used to support wildlife management and conservation decisions.

The program will prioritize monitoring animals such as black bears, bobcats, white-tailed deer, and fishers. Cameras will also capture images of other mammals and birds, including wild turkeys.

Joelee Tooley, the citizen science coordinator and a research support specialist in Cornell’s Department of Natural Resources and the Environment within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, stated that the program is expanding into areas that have not been monitored in this way before. Tooley said the long-term goal is to deploy thousands of cameras, which will provide significant data to track and understand changes in population trends over time.
