Albuquerque, Bernalillo Secure $150M for Opioid Recovery
Bernalillo County and the City of Albuquerque are preparing to allocate money from the settlement of lawsuits against pharmaceutical distributors over synthetic opioid marketing and misuse. The lawsuit settlement provides Bernalillo County with about $1.9 million and Albuquerque with about $2.3 million each year for the next 15 years, totalling $150 million over the period. The plan calls for directing roughly 60% of these funds towards treatment and 40% towards prevention.
Several joint initiatives are part of these plans. One initiative, called “Growing Our Own,” will invest $4 million in competitive grants to local providers to build provider capacity and sustainability. An additional $20 million is planned to be used for increasing physical capacity for treatment by investing in new beds, facilities, interventions, and prevention services through a competitive grant fund.
Another initiative will use $9.6 million to expand behavioral health treatment and counseling services in middle schools through the APS Crossroads program, which currently offers substance use prevention and intervention services to high schools. Funds are also allocated annually at the current amounts for both Bernalillo County and Albuquerque, aiming to expand services and programs that support opioid treatment, intervention, and prevention.
