North Atlantic Right Whale Spotted Near North Carolina

The Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute (CMARI) has announced that the first North Atlantic right whale of the season has been spotted. The whale, cataloged as #3540 and named ‘Black Heart’, is a 20-year-old female. She was sighted approximately 2.3 nautical miles east of High Hills, which is part of Cape Lookout National Seashore in North Carolina, on November 20.
The sighting was conducted by CMARI’s aerial survey team and is documented under NOAA permit #26919. This effort is funded by the United States Army Corps of Engineers.
